Education at Jarrow

For schools:

The Bede's World Education Department offers fully taught visits, each session lasting 1hour and 45 minutes.  The sessions are interactive, include hands on activities, object handling, dressing up, role play and question and answer sessions. 

Visits at Bede's World include the following:
Boy at the Monastery
What would Bede have felt when he became a monk, aged 7? What did he wear? How did he spend his day? Pupils learn about daily life and work in an Anglo-Saxon monastery. They dress in habits and process through St Paul’s Church, part of which stood in Bede’s time.
Through exploring the monastic site, the church and museum, pupils learn how to use written and physical evidence to understand life in Anglo-Saxon Northumbria.
This visit can be focus solely on the Anglo-Saxon period, or set the monastery in its wider chronological context, including the Vikings

Anglo-Saxon Life
Explore life for the ordinary Anglo-Saxons in our demonstration seventh century farm. Discover the buildings, animals, food, materials and work that would have been familiar in the day. Through handling replica tools and jewellery and exploring the buildings, children will experience first hand how written and archaeological evidence is used to piece together the past.
KS1- 4 History, English, Citizenship; KS1- 2 Geography.

Scriptorium
An opportunity to be a scribe, handle replica tools and materials and write with a quill pen in Uncial script. By combining history with an element of literacy, pupils get a feel for the hard work and skill needed to make the beautiful books that monasteries were famous for in early medieval times.

Beowulf Visit 
Explore the museum are farm through the tale of Beowulf
This visit, suitable for primary and Special schools, takes pupils on a trail of discovery through the museum and out onto the farm whilst acting out the story of Beowulf.

Bede's World offer a variety of Learn & Make visits for KS1 which both explore the site and involve making a craft object that can be taken home or back to school

Bede's World offer outreach visits into schools including assemblies

Hazard Identification forms and pre-visit information are available on booking a visit.  Free pre-visit for teachers planning a visit on request.  A full day (2 taught sessions) £5.00 + VAT per child, 1 session £3.00 + VAT per child. 1 : 8 ratio of adult to children and carers free.  Lunch room and packed lunches available to schools.
