Education at Wearmouth
At Wearmouth both the National Glass Centre and St Peter's Church offer educational opportunities for school children, adults community groups and families, as does Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens in Sunderland city centre.
For schools:
The National Glass Centre offers a variety of workshops for schools (key stages 1 – 4) including:
- History of Sunderland, EXPLORE: Go back in time to 674 with a visit to St. Peter's Church. Discover the story of Sunderland's Patron Saint, Benedict Biscop and find out how he founded the first church in Sunderland and brought French glaziers to create the UK's first stained glass windows. CREATE: Walk back to NGC along the River Wear before taking part in a creative stained glass window inspired workshops. From £7 per student.
- Explore & Create sessions based around NGC’s current exhibition followed by one of the following activities: Glass Fused Mosaic, Glass Painting, Create a Kaleidoscope and Getting Creative in the Gallery. From £2 per student.
- Changing States, Science of Glass Creative Workshops. Students will explore the exhibitions and glass studios, focusing on the scientific make-up of glass and the techniques used in glass-making. Students will then respond to art works in the contemporary exhibition in a creative workshop. From £2 per student.
- National Glass Centre delivers bespoke practical projects and workshops in glass to schools, colleges, universities and teachers.
St Peter's offer key stage 2 resources and guided tours.
At Sunderland and Museum and Winter Gardens there are a range of workshops on offer for school, around the varied collections which include fine and decorative art, natural sciences, maritime and social history, textiles and archaeology.
For adults/community learning:
National Glass Centre offers a range of glass making workshops and courses. This includes one off glass making sessions, such as Blow a Glass Bauble and One-to One Glass Blowing.NGC delivers a range of creative community sessions, workshops, projects and courses to a wide range of groups of all ages and abilities.An Education Room is available for lunches. This is provided free to groups undertaking a workshop and at a cost of £25 to self-led groups.
St Peter's Church offers occasional study courses and lectures and community groups are welcome to book for guided tours.
Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens has an outreach team who work with the wider community, with many outreach projects taking place throughout the year.
