The Sunderland Room - National Glass Centre

National Glass Centre is pleased to present the new improved Sunderland Room, now with a permanent exhibition tracing the story and legacy of Sunderland's Patron Saint, Benedict Biscop. 

Over thirteen centuries ago Benedict Biscop, founder of the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow, brought craftsmen from France to teach the techniques of making coloured glass.  This was the beginning of Wearside's glass making tradition.

This series continues with a lecture on King Ecgfrith and the Churches of the Tyne. Lecture to be given at 12 noon by Dr Alex Woolf of St Andrew's University, at Bede's World.

Living Waterways family fun day

This is a family-friendly event at Boldon Community Association with the Living Waterways Project andDurham Wildlife Trust, who have been working along parts of the River Don along the Bede's Way route.   More information coming soon. Read more

Bede's Way walk annual pilgrimage

This 12-mile walk will start at St Paul’s Church, Jarrow at 9.30am with a short service, before participants set off for Sunderland at 10.00am.
 
Walkers will stop for a packed lunch at the local beauty spot of Cleadon Hills Windmill, before reaching St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth at approximately 4.00pm.

Please dress appropriately for the weather with outdoor clothes and walking shoes/boots.

Participants will need to bring their own packed lunch.
