National Glass Centre is pleased to present the new improved Sunderland Room, now with a permanent exhibition tracing the story and legacy of Sunderland's Patron Saint, Benedict Biscop.
Over thirteen centuries ago Benedict Biscop, founder of the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow, brought craftsmen from France to teach the techniques of making coloured glass. This was the beginning of Wearside's glass making tradition.
The Sunderland Room also presents changing exhibitions of objects, ephemera and films from personal and historic public collections relating to glass making in Sunderland and the ship building industry on the River Wear, where National Glass Centre now stands
