7th century excavated glass

Over 1,000 fragments of glass excavated from the site of the twin monastery now make up the the largest collection of glass from the 7th century anywhere in Europe.

Wearmouth-Jarrow was the first place in England to house coloured window glass, after its founder Benedict Biscop brought glaziers to the region from Italy.
