National Glass Centre

National Glass Centre is a cultural venue situated on the north bank of the River Wear in Sunderland, neighbouring St. Peter’s Church.
Housed in an innovative glass and steel building, National Glass Centre provides activities and experiences to explore, enjoy and inspire through glass. This continues a legacy of innovation and craftsmanship first introduced in Wearmouth by Benedict Biscop in 674AD,  creating the first stained glass windows in England at St. Peter’s Church and establishing the foundation of a renowned glass-making industry.

National Glass Centre offers plenty to see and do for all the family; from a walk on our unique glass roof to the galleries, presenting an exciting programme of international contemporary art as well as historical collections of glass; live glassblowing everyday; creative workshops offering hands-on glassmaking and an education programme for children, adults, schools and colleges.

National Glass Centre is also a great place to shop, with the opportunity to buy the very best in glass, art, craft and design and a commissioning service for business and private customers, or just relax in our restaurant, with spectacular riverside views and some of the finest local produce from our award-winning lunchtime menu.

National Glass Centre is open 7 days a week, from 10am to 5pm. Free admission, free car parking and all areas are fully accessible by level access or lift.

Family activities, creative workshops, adult courses and one-off events take place thorughout the year, at weekends and during school holidays.

Live glassblowing takes place daily at 12, 2 & 4pm.
