Royal boost for World Heritage bid

THE bid to secure World Heritage Site Status for the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow has received a boost this week with a visit from His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester.

The Duke, who is Patron of Bede's World in Jarrow, returned to the museum on Wednesday, 8 February, to hear all about the latest developments with the bid and the museum itself.

Benedict Biscop Day celebrations

Sunderland's Patron Saint will be celebrated this year with events taking place across the city.

From a display at the City Library and Arts Centre to activities at the National Glass Centre and services at St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth and Sunderland Minster, there’s something for everyone.
From Monday 9th January to Saturday 14th January, visitors can enjoy a free display about Biscop’s life and legacy at the City Library and Arts Centre.

Works bring site to life

Visiting Wearmouth-Jarrow is now better than ever thanks to a £350,000 investment.

New information panels, interactive displays, signage and display units have been installed to help tell the story of the 7th century Anglo-Saxon monastery, which is this year’s UK nomination for World Heritage Site status.

The bid for World Heritage Site status centres on St Peter’s Church, Sunderland and St Paul’s Church in Jarrow. The National Glass Centre, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens and Bede’s World are also key venues in the bid.

Musical tribute to St Bede

THE life of famous saint the Venerable Bede will be celebrated with the sound of music.

A new work by South Tyneside composer Ron Smith will be premiered at Bede’s World in Jarrow.

Based on the life and work of the revered scholar and saint, who studied and prayed at the monastic site of St Paul’s Church, Jarrow, the work will be performed by the composer.

Mr Smith, who spent several months creating his Bede Concerto, used the latest computer-generated sounds for his musical tribute to St Bede.
