Kevin has a ball at Bede's Bakehouse

Friday 14 Nov 08

Ex SAFC footballer Kevin Ball, called into St Peter’s Church in Sunderland today (Monday) to officially open its new café and gift shop.
Bede’s Bakehouse is a charitable organisation employing a manager and run by a team of volunteers. It has been named after Venerable Bede, the famous Monk who lived and studied at the church in the 7th Century.
St Peter’s Church together with St Paul’s Church in Jarrow make up the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow which will be nominated for World Heritage Site Status by the UK Government in 2010.
Speaking at the opening Kevin Ball said: “I am delighted to be here to open this facility in what could soon be a World Heritage Site.
“St Peter’s Church is a very impressive building and it is great that it can now offer the visitors who flock through its doors a welcoming cup of tea as well.”
Bede’s Bakehouse is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am to 2.30pm and for Sunday lunch 1pm to 3pm. It seves a selection of cakes and light lunches. St Peter’s Church is open every day from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
While at the church Kevin also took the opportunity to pledge his support for the World Heritage Site bid by signing 'The Book of Life'. The book is a new 'manuscript' which is being used to record public support.
