Why do we want to achieve world heritage site status?

World Heritage Site status is awarded by UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) to places with outstanding cultural or natural significance, that the international community has a duty to protect for future generations.

Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.

World Heritage Sites are unique and diverse, and belong to everyone, irrespective of the territory on which they are located.

Achieving World Heritage Site status for Wearmouth-Jarrow will:

  • raise levels of awareness and pride in the sites, from the local communities
  • gain international recognition for their historical and cultural significance
  • ensure that the sites are managed and protected for years to come
