  • Be a monk for a day
  • Walk around the 7th Century demonstration farm

The Venerable Bede, early Europe’s greatest scholar, who lived and worked at the monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow 1300 years ago. His life is celebrated at Bede's World.

Attractions at Bede's World include a modern museum home to a permanent ‘Age of Bede’ exhibition, displaying finds excavated from the site of St Paul’s monastery. The exhibition includes the largest collection of some of the earliest coloured window glass from Western Europe, dating back to the late 7th and early 8th century.  The museum is also home to an interactive gallery which showcases Bede’s scientific discoveries, as well as a community gallery space displaying work from local artists and craftsmen

Visitors can explore the Anglo-Saxon demonstration farm, which brings together the animals, timber buildings, crops and vegetables that featured in the Northumbrian landscape of Bede’s day.

Other attractions on site include Jarrow Hall, an elegant grade-II listed Georgian building, which overlooks the land which was once the monastic estate known to Bede.  "The Life and Times of Jarrow Hall" exhibition on display within the Hall, provides visitors with fascinating insight into the lives of past inhabitants.

Drewett's Park, which connects St Paul’s Church with Bede's World, provides outdoor space to enjoy and also has a fantastic new themed children's play area (opening Summer 2010).
